Harvest Celebration

We will be having our Harvest Celebration Friday, October 28th from 2:15 - 3:00.  All are welcome to join us!  Your child is invited to wear orange to school to celebrate the fall season.

October is Fire Safety Month

On Thursday, we had The Colchester Firefighters come to our class to discuss fire safety.  The students saw what a fully dressed firefighter would look like and sound like.  We also learned some really great tips in the event of a fire emergency.  Please talk to your child about a family plan and a meeting place.  We were invited to get in a fire truck and we wrote about some "super cool" things we saw.

Leaves, Leaves, Leaves

It sure is fall in Vermont with all the changing colors! We have spent a great part our week studying about leaves. We went on a leaf walk and picked up a "special" leaf for a math packet, learned the different patterns of a leaf in Four Winds Tuesday, read Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert and created our very own Leaf Person/Animal.

Flynn Theater Trip

We saw Sylvester and the Magic Pebble at The Flynn Theater today. Here are some photos of the class waiting for the show to begin. On Friday, we read the story in class and made our own class book. The children had to finish the sentence "If I had a magic pebble I would wish for..."

Flynn Theater Trip Monday / No School on Friday

Our class will be going to see Sylvester and the Magic Pebble Monday, Oct. 17th. The show begins at 12:00 (noon) and our bus will be leaving UMS at 11:00. Therefore, we will be eating lunch in the classroom that day. PLEASE send your child to school with a cold lunch and a drink. We will be having snack in the afternoon on that day only.
Friday, October 21st there will be NO SCHOOL for students. It is a teacher in-service day for the Colchester Schools.

Community of Learners

We have had so much fun getting to know each other in Room 12. We are building a community of learners and friends in this classroom. They are truly a JOY to be with. I feel so lucky to have such caring and kind friends with me each day! It is now time to branch out and discover that beyond our classroom and school community we live the community of Colchester. Our next goal is to discuss the community we live in and to visit a few of these places. Today we went to Claussen's Greenhouse (next door)and picked out 12 pumpkins for each classroom at UMS. The UMS PTO has graciously agreed to pay for these. As a community member of a school we were able to help out other classrooms by delivering their pumpkins to them. We also got to see a business in our local community. The students felt so proud and excited to do this activity together and for our school.

Daily 5!

This week I introduced the final component of The Daily 5! Students are practicing "Listening to Reading" this week. This can be done in 2 ways in our classroom. We have a few walkmans with headphones (old school) to listen to books on tape and computers in the room to listen to reading websites. Here are a few pictures of The Daily 5 in action.

Open House

We had a SUPER turnout for our Open House Thursday night. It was so much fun to see the students share their classroom with all of you. Here is a slideshow of the kids getting ready, students with their families, and the clean up Friday morning. THANK YOU for taking the time to visit a BIG part of your child's life!
