Reading Workshop

In reading workshop we have been learning about characters, setting, problem and solution.  We created this anchor chart together about the main character Chrysanthemum.  What the character looks like on the outside (appearance) and what the character is like inside (personality).  As you read at home with your child continue to discuss character traits.  :)
As we discuss each story element during our mini-lesson we pass the "think dot".  Here is a student making a prediction about the story using the title and cover.
Holding the "think dot" and explaining her prediction.  We have "think dots" for character, setting, problem, solution, and summary.  (I didn't get a picture of all of them)

After conferencing with this student she realized her story had more than one problem.  She is sharing this with the class using our document camera.

Echo Field Trip

Our Class had the opportunity to participate in the Wetland Wonders Program.    During the program students discussed the skills a naturalist needs, used a wetland model to determine where animals and plants live, and simulated a wetland at night.

Rainbow Fish

Today our class listened to the story The Rainbow Fish.  This fit in nicely with our theme of friendship and community building.  We are a great group of citizens who are helpful and caring!  ~Stay tuned for our first I-Movie about Friendship!  :)

Harvest Celebration

We will be having a Harvest Celebration on Friday, October 31st from 1:20-2:00 in the classroom.  Please visit our sign-up genius to the left of this post if you are able to donate some type of goody.  Please add a treat if you have something else creative in mind.  Just remember we are a nut free classroom and all baked goods need to be approved the day before the celebration with Nurse Kelly.  Thank you~

Mystery Number Skype

We had our first Mystery Number Skype this morning during math workshop.  We skyped with Ms. Larose's class at Porters Point School.
Ms. Larose's class was trying to figure out our mystery number. Our mystery number was 81. To figure out Ms. Larose's mystery number we asked a variety of yes/no questions. Some of the questions we asked were:

Is your number odd?
Is your number greater than 50?
Is your number a multiple of 5?
Does your number have a 9 in the ones place value?
Does your number have a 3 in the tens place value?

Every student had a 100s chart and marked off numbers on their hundreds chart when Ms. Larose’s class answered one of our questions. After a lot of hard work and collaboration we figured out Ms. Larose's class mystery number was 59! We are planning on scheduling more mystery number skypes this year!
