St. Patrick's Day Fun!

Last week the kids were "tricked" a few times by the leprechaun.  He left them math problems to solve, their work in the wrong table spots and left our toilet water all green.  When the leprechaun really liked your child's school work he/she received a shamrock stamp or a green coin.  The kids had a BLAST with all of this!

Word Study/Spelling News

Last week in word study we spent a lot of time reviewing for our 2nd proficiency check in.  I focused a lot of time on reviewing word families and red words.  What I learned as a teacher is that students need additional modeling and practice of writing "good" sentences.  This week there are NO NEW words as we are only practicng sentence structure and writing.

Criteria for a "good" sentence:
*  Begins with a capital letter
*  Ends with proper punctuation
*  There are spaces between the words
*  The sentence makes sense
**Please remind your child that a capital in the middle of a sentence is only appropriate if it is the beginning of a name

Today students were a red word for a day!  We even greeted each other by our red words at morning meeting.  The kids LOVED it!  They had to create and write a sentence with their red word and with a friend's red word.  Please continue to support your child at home in writing!

Guidance News from Mrs. McCleary

Guidance News:  We have finished our units on bullying and problem solving.  We had really good discussions about both topics.  The main focus was on understanding the difference between a small problem and a big problem.  If it is a small problem we expect kids to try two different strategies to solve it.  If it is a big problem (scary or dangerous) kids should get help from an adult that they trust and not try to solve it on their own.   Our next unit will cover personal safety.  This is a good follow up to problem solving because problems with personal safety require adult help.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call me at 264-5951.  ~ Carol McCleary

Our Performance of Knuffle Bunny

This morning at the school-wide meeting our1st graders turned into "performers" from the story Knuffle Bunny.  The students together did a solo act where they acted out the motions, gestures and facial expressions of the characters in the story.  Below is a slide show of the class making the Knuffle Bunny hats, waiting to perform, and the performance.  Enjoy!

Flynn Performance ~ Knuffle Bunny (Some photos of us at the show)

Knuffle Bunny A Cautionary Tale by Moe Willems was an outstanding show at the Flynn Theater Wednesday afternoon.  I was not aloud to take pictures of the show, but the above pictures are of us waiting for it  to begin.
Our class has been practicing acting out the story of Knuffle Bunny in class.  The performers (students) are not speaking but using facial expressions, gestures, and other movements to represent the characters in the story as I read the story aloud.  We will be "performing" this (it is called a solo act) at our next school wide meeting Wednesday, March 9th.  The students are VERY excited to do this!
