Word Study/Spelling News

Last week in word study we spent a lot of time reviewing for our 2nd proficiency check in.  I focused a lot of time on reviewing word families and red words.  What I learned as a teacher is that students need additional modeling and practice of writing "good" sentences.  This week there are NO NEW words as we are only practicng sentence structure and writing.

Criteria for a "good" sentence:
*  Begins with a capital letter
*  Ends with proper punctuation
*  There are spaces between the words
*  The sentence makes sense
**Please remind your child that a capital in the middle of a sentence is only appropriate if it is the beginning of a name

Today students were a red word for a day!  We even greeted each other by our red words at morning meeting.  The kids LOVED it!  They had to create and write a sentence with their red word and with a friend's red word.  Please continue to support your child at home in writing!

Red Word Greeting!
